How does a light bulb work?
A light bulb works by using a thin metal wire inside the bulb, which is heated by electricity. When the wire is heated enough, it glows and creates light. Hence the name incandescent lamp. The high resistance of the filament and the lack of oxygen in the bulb prevents the bulb from burning out.
What does the light bulb consist of?
A light bulb usually consists of a shell and a tungsten filament. A holder or stem is attached to the base of the bulb. This allows electric current to pass through the oxygen-poor bulb. Wires built into the stem support the filaments and connecting wires. Inside the glass bulb today is a nitrogen or noble gas. This can be argon or xenon, for example. That while the light bulb used to be made of vacuum.
