Halogen plug-in bulbs are small bulbs with 2 metal pins that operate on 12v. Here you will find G4 plug-in bulbs and GY6.35 plug-in bulbs in different wattages.
GY6.35 or G4 plug-in bulb?
The main difference between a GY6.35 and G4 halogen plug-in bulb is the distance between the pins.
- G4 plug-in bulbs have two pins that are 4 mm apart. You often find them in smaller fixtures, such as under-cabinet lighting and decorative lighting.
- GY6.35 plug-in bulbs also have two pins, but they are 6.35 mm apart. This type of plug-in bulb is often used in larger fixtures.
Both bulbs are low-voltage halogen bulbs, or 12-volt bulbs. Although they are similar in appearance, you cannot interchange G4 and GY6.35 plug lamps because of the difference in pin spacing. Look on your old bulb or fixture to see which socket you need. Then immediately check the maximum wattage. This is because certain fixtures work with a maximum wattage.
Difference between G4 and G9 bulbs
We understand that G4 and G9 bulbs sometimes cause confusion, they are quite similar. Note the fitting: a G4 has two straight pins, and a G9 has 2 (or 2x2) curved pins. You can also measure the distance between the pins. On a G4 it is 4mm, while on a G9 it is 9mm. Take a good look at the picture below. Above you can see a G4 fitting and below a G9 fitting.
