Halogen lamp and halogen bulbs

Halogen lamps are loved for their versatility. In addition, they are easily dimmable. The halogen lamp is one of the classic lamps at the moment. Yet, they are more modern than the incandescent bulb. Halogen bulbs give very bright light of good quality and are often used in pears with clear glass. Halogen bulbs come in many shapes and sizes. For example, we have halogen bulbs with the familiar e27 fitting, halogen with bayonet fitting, as well as multiple halogen spotlights or G4 halogen.

Buying Halogen Lamps

If you are looking for lamps that are ideal for detailed work and bright lighting, halogen lamps may be a good choice for you. These lamps are versatile, affordable and offer many benefits. Here we cover everything you need to know before buying halogen bulbs.

Why halogen bulbs?

Halogen bulbs are perfect for creating a strong, bright light source. They are ideal for kitchens and offices where you need excellent lighting for detailed work. They can also be used well in other parts of the house, such as the garden. Did your traditional light bulbs break down? Then we understand that this causes frustration. Choose halogen bulbs that last longer and also use less energy. Who wouldn't want that?

Bulb life

An average halogen bulb lasts up to 2,000 hours. This is longer than an incandescent bulb but much shorter than an LED bulb, which can last up to 25,000 hours. However, halogen bulbs are cheaper to purchase than LED bulbs. We'll come back to this in a moment.

Are halogen bulbs better than incandescent bulbs?

Yes, halogen bulbs are a type of incandescent bulb, but they have a number of advantages. A special capsule inside the bulb allows the filament to burn more efficiently, resulting in a whiter light temperature and a wider light spectrum.

Factors to consider

Before purchasing a halogen lamp, it is important to know the voltage and base type. This often depends on the lamp holder in which you plan to place the bulb. Above all, look at the bulb you have now and want to replace. No bulb? Then there is (if all goes well) information on the lamp holder / on fixture. Note:

  • The shape of the lamp. Is this a round lamp, a candle lamp, a tube lamp or a spotlight?
  • The type of socket. Halogen bulbs come with a small fitting E14, a large fitting E27 or even an extra-large fitting E40. In addition, there are halogen spotlights with a plug-in fitting or a swivel fitting. Finally, there are small halogen plug-in bulbs.
  • The diameter. Measure the space provided by the fixture. Halogen spotlights range from 25 mm to 111 mm. For our standard lamps, we have also included the length and diameter with the specifications, so you can check in advance whether the lamp will fit.
  • The wattage. Check the maximum wattage on the fixture or lamp holder. Less is always possible, but never go higher than the recommended wattage.
  • The voltage. Most bulbs work on 230 volts, but, for example, halogen recessed spotlights work on 12 volts. Those fixtures are then suitable for that. We recommend choosing the voltage that matches your fixture.

The different color temperatures of halogen lamps, from 2700 to 6500 Kelvin

The color temperature has a great effect on the atmosphere in the room, which is why we think this is an important aspect when choosing the right lighting. Halogen lamps have a wide range of color temperatures, from 2700 Kelvin (warm white) to 6500 Kelvin (daylight).

Cozy light with a halogen lamp

At 2700 Kelvin, the halogen lamp emits a warm and cozy light, ideal for living rooms and bedrooms where a relaxing atmosphere is desired. As we move up the Kelvin scale, around 4000 Kelvin, we get a neutral white light that is excellent for kitchens and offices where brightness and visibility are crucial. At the other end of the spectrum, at 6500 Kelvin, halogen lamps almost simulate natural daylight. These are particularly useful in environments where detailed tasks are performed, such as workshops or studios, where accurate color rendering is required.

An excellent color rendering index (CRI).

Another thing that sets halogen lamps apart is their excellent color rendering index (CRI), which is usually above 90. This means that colors look much more natural and vibrant under this type of lighting, which can be essential for tasks such as cooking, reading, or even judging artwork.

Buying halogen bulbs? Keep this in mind

Have you found the perfect halogen bulb? Then take a moment to consider these safety aspects:

  1. Be careful, halogen bulbs get hot when left on for a long time. Don't touch them for too long, as they can cause burns. They can also be a fire hazard if they are too close to flammable materials.
  2. Higher pressure: The inside of a halogen lamp is under pressure. Although it does not happen often, a lamp can burst, especially if it is damaged.
  3. Touching with bare hands: Grease and oil from the skin can be left on the glass surface of the lamp. This causes the glass to heat unevenly, which can shorten the life of the lamp or even cause it to crack. Therefore, always use a clean cloth or tissue when installing or moving the lamp.
  4. Installation: It is important to choose the right wattage and socket for your lamps. A lamp that has too much wattage for a particular fixture can overheat, posing a fire hazard.
  5. Disposal: Halogen bulbs cannot be recycled like many other bulbs. Therefore, they (like incandescent bulbs) should simply go in the trash. However, always return LED bulbs, energy-saving bulbs and fluorescent tubes to a store or to the municipality.

Advantages of a halogen bulb

Low cost: Halogen bulbs are generally cheaper than LED bulbs. Easy to replace: Their universal design makes them easy to replace. Dimmable: Most halogen bulbs are dimmable, allowing you to adjust the brightness according to your needs.

What about the prices of halogen bulbs?

If you are looking for high-quality lighting without spending a lot, halogen bulbs are the best choice. They offer unmatched light quality that is ideal for both general and task lighting, all at a fraction of the cost of LED bulbs. Halogen bulbs are often attractively priced, meaning you can inexpensively purchase several halogen bulbs at once in bundles. On the other hand, they use more energy and do not last as long as LED bulbs. Therefore, in the long run, LED bulbs are more economical.

Buy small halogen bulbs

Small halogen bulbs come in many shapes and sizes. Most well-known are 12-volt halogen bulbs with a G4 or G9 plug-in fitting. These small capsule bulbs are very small and have two pins. You usually plug these into a lamp holder that works with 12 volts. There are also tube bulbs with a small fitting. Think, for example, of a halogen bulb for the refrigerator, hood or sewing machine.

How does halogen lighting work?

Halogen bulbs, halogen plug-in bulbs and halogen spotlights work just like an incandescent bulb with a filament. The difference is that halogen lighting works with gas in the glass. This makes the filament last longer and the bulb less likely to break. Also, the glass of the bulb itself is quartz glass, making it resistant to higher temperatures. Halogen lighting typically has a higher light output than an incandescent bulb.

Halogen bulb banned?

Since September 2018, the European Union has banned halogen in Europe. That is, the production and sale of new stock. The EU did this to reduce power consumption in Europe and encourage the use of more economical alternatives. However, we have a large existing stock of halogen bulbs so you can still just order them from us. In addition, halogen lamps for special applications are still allowed because they are not replaceable by more economical alternatives.

Do you prefer a low consumption bulb? Then you can often buy an LED lamp with your preferred shape and socket in our webshop. With our LED lamps it is also mentioned which wattage halogen lamp it replaces.
